This seminar is a first in the UK to combine social studies by Dr. Harding on the phenomenon of status/weapon dogs and their owners and Colin Spender who lectures on criminal dog law from a Police perspective linking into Dr. Harding's groundbreaking new sociology science study.
This is a must attend seminar for all of those working with dogs. Not only a fascinating insight into the world of Status Dogs, Weapon Dogs and their owners by author Simon Harding, (Unleashed: The phenomena of status dogs and weapon dogs)
Simon will be talking about his findings and how they confirm that public concerns about the threat to public safety from the increase of bull breeds and large aggressive dogs are legitimate.
Simon will discuss how the the increased commodification of dogs has led to greater ‘backstreet’ breeding for profit of aggressive dogs. He describes how this in turn leads to more aggressive dogs since the breeding programme seeks out aggressive characteristics, dispelling the ‘deed not breed’ myth.
He also believes that owners, who are overwhelmingly young men, select aggressive bull breeds because of their reputational branding, e.g. loyalty, strength and malleability, and they buy into this. The young men are often unemployed with few qualifications and they see the dogs as giving them the status they feel otherwise unable to achieve.
Finally, the study found that making money from breeding, dog fighting and criminal activities are stronger motivations for status dog ownership than fashion.
The publication is particularly timely, as it comes just after new Sentencing Council guidelines have been issued in the UK for proposing tougher sentences for dangerous dog owners.
The seminar also contains a practical view of the Dog Laws and how that affects those working with dogs. When working with Clients in whatever capacity, you need to be aware of the legal ramifications of the dogs with which you are working and the legal responsibilities that you hold when practically working with dogs or imparting advice for people to follow by Colin Spender.
